The Advice of the Traders of Persian Carpets
A lot of water was poured since the times when in Sultan City came the famous trader Exer. Quite many stories he had told, and even quite more he had made happen. To many people he offered his help, and many people helped him. There was, however, a story he always used to only mention, but always postponed. The story of the traders of persian carpets.
But there came a sunny day when the young students of the trade academy of “Desert Rock” appeared at his door and asked him to tell them the story for the carpenters in the Orient. Exer complacently gave up in front of the young spirit of the boys and girls, poured a glass of fragrant tea, sat comfortably in his knitted chair and began his tale…
- When I was a little boy, my father sent me for several months to study the art of trading to some of the most famous traders in the Orient – the traders of Persian carpets. My father’s advice was simple – “you have to learn how these traders offer their carpets, what words they use, how they say them and how they convice people to buy carpets.”
After arriving, the carpenters accepted me with joy because there were rarely any young students there. Everyone started giving me advice, showing me their carpets and telling me the ways of trading they had established. From all these words I soon became so confused that everyone became 0ne giant mess in my head. Everyone constantly rushed over in order to tell me how they convince the buyers. In the end of my training, I asked them something really simple:
- Each one of you claims that his own way of selling is the best and most usefull for us traders. But you are 300 people. It is hard to remember 300 pieces of advice. So which are the 3 best trade lessons I have to learn and take back with me to Sultan City?
Then Demirius, the oldest of them all, stood up and said:
- One of the three most important things you have to remember is that you should not wait but instead should look for the ones who should buy. I am the oldest here and since I can remember myself as a person, everyone who sells in our lands shouts, attracts people and praises their goods. And this is why they sell. If you look for the buyers on your own, you will win one hundred times more coins from when just waiting. If you wait, you will be soon begging on the streets.
After him stood Khazim, the most experienced trader, and gave this advice:
- You should always remember that “the mind wishes what it does not see, while the eyes wishes what it sees.” Here is why your goods should always be exposed in the best way possibe, to be visible from a distance and to attract the eye so that everyone wishes to have it.
Finally spoke Zaffer, the wisest of all traders. He slowly stood up in front of all of his friends and told them the following things:
- My respected friends are absolutely right. These are two of the three most important lessons you should take back with you.
- And what is the third one, Master Zaffer? – I asked.
The third one is to remember that “nobody gives money for something until he understands for what he is paying.” This is why you should be able to explain the characteristics of your goods. Look how we tell stories about our carpets – for their qualities, for their colors, for their ornaments, for their sizes, for the hands that made them, for the wool used, for the animals that gave that wool. Nobody will pay a single coin until he finds out what he is paying for and why he’s paying. That’s it!
I brought these rules back with me to Sultan City, told them to my father, and he smiled, put his hand on my shoulder and told me: “Son, this is your gift from me! Now use it for the rest of your life!” Back then I did not believe them, but now I’m sure that these three pieces of advice helped me many times in different situations and I always used them to find the right answer in case when I did not know what to do.
