Tale of the Silk Veils, Ira and the Moving Sands

Deep in the desert on the Great sandhills and far away from Sultan City was located the village of the trader caled Ira. She was famous from many years as the best master of silk veils. Traders from all over the desert came to her with the desire to buy some of her silk veils. Every young woman in the Orient dreamed of wearing one of Ira’s veils on her wedding.

In the end of the Great Moon in the village of Ira came a young trader called Exer, who, after a short rest from the long travelling, asked for a meeting with her. The famous trader of veils accepted the invitation with interest because she, as all masters, loved meeting other traders and establishing a lot of friendly contacts.

- Welcome, young Exer! – politely welcomed him Ira – We are glad to be honored with your presence. Did you have enough rest after the long travel? Did you receive good care for your rest?

-Hello, respected Ira, and thank you for the warm welcoming! I feel very well for which I am gratefull to you. I feel friendly attitude and real friendship everywhere.

- To what do we owe this visit? Rarely there is a case when someone decides to come that deep into the desert. The only traders that come here are the traders of veils and their servants with task what and how much to buy. A young man like you would not travel to the heart of the desert without a serious reason? Why are you here? – the open and direct attitude Ira showed was so strong that it could not be resisted.

- Well, now that you’re asking, I will answer you straight – smiled Exer – I come from Sultan City with the hope that you will enlighten me in a secret. A secret about trading, that is my burden for years and that I can still not find answer for. I am a young trader and I find the answers to my secrets one by one. I think that the answer of this particular secret is in you!

- Well, well, who am I to enlighten secrets to young traders like you? You have studied trading in the Sultan palace, while I am a trader that learned everything by herself. This is not noble at all, making fun of a woman. – upbraidedly looked him Aira.

-No, no Ira, I am not making fun of you! I trully came to you with the hope that you will help me by telling me HOW you manage to keep the interest in your veils alive? How come people come from all over the desert and they always leave satisfied that they had bought from you? Your ways of producing do not always work just like other people’s, your servats also are not always capable of accomplishing what you want. You also have the limits that all other veil Masters from the Orient have, but still your products are the most demanded ones. How do you do it?

- This was it? Well, this is  no secret, Exer, this is no secret but a simple trading rule! – laughed Ira.

- Rule? What rule? Can I hear it? – begged her Exer.

- It’s a really easy and simple rule! I just obbey the rule of the sandhills. Everyone that does reaches what I have reached – satisfied clients and good job. If you follow it you will be well too. Do you understand, Exer? – Ira looked him again with her strict look.

- I’m affraid no, Ira! Can you explain better? – begged Exer again

- In the desert the two most important things are SAND and WIND. They are related like brother and sister, like husband and wife that can not exist one without the other. The more wind there is, the more the sandhills grow tall. This is also valid in trading – the PRICE of the goods and the INTEREST in it are also connected. The higher the interest is, the more the price grows, and the lower the interest is, the lower the price decreases. My veils are like the quicksands of the desert. Their prices move according to the wind, aka. the number of buyers that visit me. That’s all! And if there is any secret at all, dear Exer, it is not the price but the quality of the veils. Unfortunately, no matter how many times you come from Sultan City, I can not reveal the secret of how we make them so beautiful to you. This is the pride, the dignity and the living of my ancestors and my heirs as well. Is this enough? – Ira’s eyes were shining while she spoke for her veils.

-Completely, dear Ira! Thank you! You managed to answer the question I seeked answer for, and this is enough for me. I don’t want anything else from you, and beseides I deeply respect your craft. I will leave tomorrow at the crack of day. – answered Exer with huge respect and admiration for the fine trader.

- You value dignity and experience and you respect other traders’ hard work! If you preserve these qualities in you, you will become a great trader! Remember my words, young man! Farewell!

Exer returned to his tent, happy because he had understood the secret of the quicksands and they foretold a great future for him.

Business moral:

The successfull balance between supply and demand and the price of a product is the foundation of developing a successfull distribution. The skill to keep that balance, to track the trends of the market and the changes in the demand are typical for the good trader and certnainly a formula for success.
